Legislative Framework

The Red List of endangered species of plants, animals, and fungi is provided for by the provisions of Law 3937/2011 “Conservation of biodiversity and other provisions” and constitutes a fundamental tool for biodiversity management, as it serves as the basis for compiling the national list of significant species of flora and fauna, as well as the national list of endemic species.

According to the legislative framework, the Red List of Greece must be updated every five years and compiled in accordance with the criteria of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

According to Article 17 of Law 3937/2011 (Government Gazette A’ 60), the following are defined as basic biodiversity management tools:

Strategy

The national strategy
for biodiversity.

Inventory

A national biodiversity inventory
every decade.

Scientific monitoring

Scientific monitoring plans
for significant habitats and species
with a ten-year horizon.

Red lists

Red lists of threatened species of fauna and flora or other groups of organisms, with regular updates every five years, according to the criteria of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
